The Pottstown Mercury: Daniel Boone programs could be cut to balance budget
- By Denise Larive For Journal Register News Service

Salaries and benefits continue to increase at a rate that exceeds the Daniel Boone School District’s ability to keep up, this year causing a $3.5 million shortfall in the 2012-13 budget and jeopardizing athletic programs.
The school board’s Jan. 23 budget workshop illustrated — with pie charts — the impact of the district’s contracted services and debt services that total 95 percent ($50,072,681) of the budget and exceed the anticipated revenues of $49,295,342.
Superintendent Dr. Gary L. Otto said although the board reduced the number of its employees last year from 532.5 to 493, the district is still having a hard time covering the cost of salaries and benefits. The result this year is a $3.5 million deficit and programs will have to be cut or taxes increased.
Otto presented the board options to reduce the deficit that include eliminating sports and extracurricular activities, curtailing four (maybe seven) elementary teachers and increasing class sizes, eliminating elementary band, curtailing the Middle School (eighth grade) foreign language program, and making library demotions and alternative special education placements.

The Reading Eagle: Boone budget cuts could shut out sports District faces possible $3.2 million deficit; school board exploring all options
The Daniel Boone School District’s budget problems are so serious that officials are talking about eliminating interscholastic sports entirely. The option was just one of several Dr. Gary L. Otto laid out for his school board at a budget meeting Monday. Others were raising taxes and reducing elementary school staff.
At a separate meeting following the budget session, the board voted 8-1 to approve a $52.47 million preliminary budget for 2012-13 that requires a 5.8 percent tax increase. The district would need state exceptions for the increase because it exceeds its 2.3 percent tax hike ceiling.

Fireside Tales at the Daniel Boone Homestead – Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 2:00pm
Are the wintertime blues getting you and your kids down? Then join us at the Daniel Boone Homestead for our Fireside Tales and chase those blues away! Storytelling was a great way for families in the eighteenth century to pass the time during the long, dark winters. During our Fireside Tales, Homestead Friends and volunteers will read a few stories geared toward young children ages 4 – 8 and their families in the rustic atmosphere of the Wayside Lodge. On February 5, children will take part in traditional storytelling as they hear stories about Pennsylvania German and English life and heritage in the eighteenth century. We will make sure to have a nice, cheerful fire going in the fireplace in the Wayside Lodge but it will still be quite chilly inside so remember to dress warmly and bring a few extra blankets or quilts to relax on and snuggle under! Suggested donation $2.00 per child. Complimentary light refreshments will also be provided. Forget about Old Man Winter for an hour or two and spend an afternoon with your family at the Daniel Boone Homestead!

King of Prussia, PA – January 25th, 2012-
Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Blogs …. Where do businesses begin with social media? For any business big or small, that’s the million dollar question these days. Start in one channel and your audience isn’t there, could spell a slow death to your online marketing efforts.
“Social Media Cocktail”, sponsored by Da Li Social, is training dedicated to educating businesses about how to begin in social media and online marketing. The training slated for March 19th at the Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia, PA. Featuring award winning author, Liana “Li” Evans who published “Social Media Marketing: Engaging Strategies for Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media”, the event will focus on helping businesses create successful social media strategies that integrate with other online marketing channels.
“We see so many businesses, large and small, struggling with social media. From where to be, to how to train their employees, to measuring if they are successful, coming into social media can be an overwhelming endeavor for any business. Social Media Cocktail training gives businesses a foundational mix of understanding of what goes into creating a successful online marketing strategy that includes social media, ” Evans explained.
The training also features local Public Relations expert Sarah Doheny of YUBpr and online marketing and usability expert Kim Krause Berg as featured trainers. The combined experience and expertise of the trainers combines for an unparalleled exclusive experience since the training is limited to just 20 students.
The training includes 5 sessions and wraps up the day with a hands-on workshop where students can take what they learned in the previous sessions and apply them to a mock situation that can help them utilize what they learned back in their own businesses. Lunch, snacks and free wireless are also included with the training.
Social Media is a dash of Facebook, jigger of twitter rimmed with google + I will work you on making your engagements genuine business connections. It is not about “like my page” Ok I like now what? Meals on Wheels to Hold Family Fun Night Fundraiser at Friendly’s
POTTSTOWN, PA, January 19, 2012 — Meals on Wheels will hold a Family Fun Night fundraiser on Monday, February 13 at Friendly’s, 200 Shoemaker Road, Pottstown. Meals on Wheels will receive 10 percent of proceeds (dine in and take out) between 5-8 p.m.
Funds raised at this event will support Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program, which has a long history of ensuring the nutritional well-being of elderly individuals in the greater Pottstown area and has helped many seniors lead happy, healthy and independent lives.
“Thanks to the community’s ongoing support of our fundraising efforts, we are able to serve seniors and disabled individuals who turn to our program for assistance,” said Ruth Hood, program director, Meals on Wheels. “As the senior population in the western portion of Montgomery County continues to grow, Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program strives to support the goal of the Meals on Wheels Association of America — that no senior goes to bed hungry.”
Each weekday, Family Services’ Meals on Wheels program provides two meals, a hot lunch and a cold supper to refrigerate, to an average of 175 homebound elderly and disabled individuals in Pottstown, Royersford and the Lower Perkiomen Valley. Community volunteers personally deliver over 81,000 meals a year, bringing nourishment, friendship and a kind word to those most in need. Additional volunteers are always needed. Help SAVE the Daniel Boone Softball program
Daniel Boone Parents,
You may have received an email this week regarding the DB Middle School Softball program. This past two weeks there has been some discussion with the administration regarding the funding of a second coach to create equality for both the DBMS Softball and Baseball programs. At this time, there is not a resolution to the situation. Because of this, we are asking that anyone who can attend the DB School Board meeting on Monday at 7:30 at the Middle School to please join us in support.
The School Board meeting is a voting meeting this week, so there won’t be a specific agenda item in regards to the Softball coaching and team situation. However, there will be time at the end of the meeting for the public to voice “New Business”. We plan to voice our feelings and position that the school district is not providing an equal setting for our softball program and that we are asking for the district to fund a second coach.
Any support will be greatly appreciated and seen as a statement to the district administration and Board. Anyone wanting to express their feelings is encouraged to voice their feelings.
Together, we can do the right thing, because it is the right thing to do.
Thank you

Community-Buzz Welcomes Richard Bryan of Bryan Wealth Management, LLC!
Bryan Wealth Management is a fee-only financial planning firm that prides itself on personal service and trusted advice. Our investment advice is based upon a long-term, disciplined approach that manages risk through an appropriate asset allocation. We will create portfolios that are diversified, tax-efficient, and use low cost investments. As a Registered Investment Advisor, our firm is a fiduciary – which means that we place your best interests first. Our investment approach would be considered conservative in nature; you have worked hard for your money and it needs to last over your lifetime.
Richard Bryan is the principal of Bryan Wealth Management, LLC, a fee-only financial planning firm dedicated to competent, objective financial advice. Richard is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional or CFP® professional. Before starting Bryan Wealth Management, Richard worked for Vanguard, the large mutual fund company. While at Vanguard, Richard managed $100 million for 83 clients.
Richard’s ideal client is one who is near retirement or in retirement and wants help managing their money. These clients want little involvement with their investments due to a lack of time or interest and would rather not spend time worrying about money. They want to hire someone they can trust who will manage their money in a conservative manner so that their money will last over their lifetime. These clients want regular communication with their financial planner and want to know how their investments are doing, but they want the burden of managing this money taken off their shoulders. Richard takes the worry about money away from his clients so they can enjoy the things in life that are important to them.

2012 Fifth Grade National Poster Contest
http://www.sariscyclinggroup.com/index.php/poster-contest.html
Theme: Bicycling Takes me places
2011 Poster Contest Winning Design |
With spring around the corner it is a great opportunity to get our fifth grade students thinking about the bicycle as a way of getting places (for fun or for transportation). Ask each student to create a poster that reveals his or her understanding of the many different values of bicycling (it is fun, healthy and green). Students should make sure their poster follows the contest rules by using the checklist below. The winners will be selected by a panel of individuals from the Bicycling Industry.
Contest Rules
- Only one winner from each school will be eligible to compete in the State contest.
- Entry must be original artwork created by a student who is currently in the fifth grade. A student may enter the contest only once.
- The student’s first and last name must be written or signed in the lower right-hand corner on the back of the poster.
- Design:
- Poster may be done in marker, crayon, paint pens, watercolor, ink, acrylic, colored pencil, and/or tempera paint.
- Collages are not acceptable. (Do not glue anything on your poster).
- Computer or photo generated art and/or printing is not acceptable.
- Entries should not display the names of commercial products, companies or organizations.
- Entry must be no smaller than 8½ x 11″ and no larger than 14 x 18″.
- Entry must be done on paper that will allow for duplication, display and framing.
- The poster must be related to the contest theme in some way. The theme “Bicycling takes me places.” must be on the poster. All words must be spelled correctly.
- Entry should not be matted, mounted, laminated, framed or folded. Poster may be rolled and mailed in a mailing tube.
- Submit entry by March 1st to your state coordinator.
- A completed entry form must be attached to the back of the winning poster.
As a result of this activity, students should develop an understanding of:
- Designing a product in light of information given.
- Explore the causes, consequences and possible solutions to persistent, contemporary and emerging issues.
- How to act on personal and social issues, develop decision-making skills, and provide them with a foundation on which to base decisions they will face as citizens.
Prizes
One National Winner
In addition to a bike, light and a helmet one National winner will receive a three day/two night trip for two (parent or guardian and child) to Washington DC during the 2013 National Bike Summit (airfare and lodging included).

The Hub makes it easy, fun, and educational for a school to implement a walking & biking incentive program.
